Some years ago former NBC News Anchor Tom Brokaw wrote a book entitled "The Greatest Generation." As a member of that generation I have reflected often on the circumstances that caused him to describe my generation as he did. Those of us who are part of it lived through the stock market crash of 1929. We lived through the Great Depression. We survived the horrors of World War II. We were advocates for democracy during détente of the Cold War and the social agonies of the Viet Nam era. Currently, we are sharing the dangers and tensions of secular terrorism. Through all of this, my generation has struggled passionately to bring about a world of peace with opportunity for a life free from hunger and strife.
Richard A. "Dick" Johanson is a native of Fresno, California. After serving in the United States Marine Corps in WWII, he returned home to complete his education and embark on a lifelong career in motor freight transportation. The founder of a major freight brokerage company that bears his family name, he is now retired and continues to devote his time to community causes.
Mr. Johanson’s primary passion is education. He has served on boards and councils at all levels and has received recognition ranging from Distinguished Alumnus Awards to an Honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters from California State University, Fresno.
He has been married to his wife, Althea, for fifty-seven years. Dick and Althea split their time between their homes in Fresno and Avila Beach. They especially enjoy their two children, their spouses, and three granddaughters.
